Introducing YEMDA Code – A Simple 5-Digit & 7-Digit Date Coding System

YEMDA - New Date Coding System

Dates are written in many different formats around the world, such as DD/MM/YYYY, MM-DD-YYYY, and YYYY-MM-DD. While these formats work well for everyday use, they can be longer than necessary when writing short notes, maintaining records, labeling files, or creating compact codes.

To solve this, I designed a new compact date notation called YEMDA Code.

What is YEMDA?

YEMDA stands for:

- YE – Year (last two digits or full four digits)

- M – Month (single-character code)

- DA – Date (day of the month)

The system uses only one character for the month, making the entire date shorter while remaining easy to understand.

Month Codes

Month| Code

January| 1

February| 2

March| 3

April| 4

May| 5

June| 6

July| 7

August| 8

September| 9

October| A

November| B

December| C

The letters A, B, and C naturally represent the 10th, 11th, and 12th months.

5-Digit YEMDA Format

Format: "YYMDD"

Where:

- YY = Last two digits of the year

- M = Month code

- DD = Day

Examples

- 28 July 2026 → 26728

- 14 November 2026 → 26B14

- 01 January 2026 → 26101

- 31 December 2026 → 26C31

7-Digit Extended Format

For applications requiring the full year, YEMDA can be written as:

Format: "YYYYMDD"

Examples

- 28 July 2026 → 2026728

- 14 November 2026 → 2026B14

- 31 December 2026 → 2026C31

Advantages of YEMDA

- Compact and easy to write.

- Uses only one character for the month.

- Chronological by year.

- Ideal for file names, document IDs, inventory labels, diaries, and digital records.

- Easy to remember after learning the month codes.

- Compatible with both short (5-digit) and extended (7-digit) formats.

Suggested Uses

- Personal journals

- Office files

- Document numbering

- Inventory and stock labels

- Project management

- Digital file names

- Educational records

- Archive systems

Future Possibilities

The YEMDA Code is intended as a simple and practical date notation for personal and professional use. As more people adopt compact coding methods, systems like YEMDA can help make dates shorter, cleaner, and easier to record while preserving clarity.

Examples at a Glance

Normal Date| 5-Digit YEMDA| 7-Digit YEMDA

28 July 2026| 26728| 2026728

14 November 2026| 26B14| 2026B14

31 December 2026| 26C31| 2026C31

01 January 2026| 26101| 2026101
