Basics of Electrical Distribution Systems by Dr.VAM

Image
Basics of an Electrical Distribution System An electrical distribution system is the part of the power system that delivers electricity from the transmission network to homes, industries, and commercial consumers. Flow of Electricity Generating Station → Transmission Lines → Distribution Substation → Distribution Lines → Distribution Transformer → Consumers Main Components 1. Generating Station Produces electricity (typically at 11–25 kV). 2. Transmission System Voltage is stepped up (110 kV, 220 kV, 400 kV, or higher) to reduce transmission losses over long distances. 3. Distribution Substation Steps down the transmission voltage to distribution levels such as 33 kV or 11 kV. 4. Primary Distribution Carries power at 11 kV or 33 kV to local areas. 5. Distribution Transformer Reduces the voltage from 11 kV to 415/230 V. 6. Secondary Distribution Supplies : 415 V (three-phase) for industries and larger buildings. 230 V (single-phase) for homes. Types of Distribution Sys...

Corona in Electrical Engineering Video by Dr.VAM

Image
In Electrical Engineering, Corona (or Corona Discharge) is the partial ionization of the air surrounding a high-voltage conductor when the electric field exceeds the dielectric strength of air (about 30 kV/cm under standard conditions). Simple Explanation When the voltage on a transmission line becomes very high, the air around the conductor gets ionized. This creates a faint bluish-violet glow, a hissing sound, and sometimes the smell of ozone. This phenomenon is called corona. Conditions for Corona High transmission voltage (typically above 33 kV, becoming more significant at higher voltages) Small conductor diameter Rough or dirty conductor surface Humid, rainy, or dusty weather Effects of Corona Power loss (called corona loss) Radio and television interference Audible noise (hissing or crackling) Ozone formation Deterioration of insulation over time Advantages Reduces the severity of lightning and switching surges. Helps distribute electric stress more uniformly around conduct...

TANGEC - Proposed rename of TNGECL

Image
Tangedco will be split into three companies namely Tamil Nadu Power Generation Corporation (TNPGC), Tamil Nadu Power Distribution Corporation (TNPDC), Tamil Nadu Green Energy Corporation. Comn suggests, the abbreviation TANGEC for Green energy Company.  TANGEC is the abbreviation of TAmil Nadu Green Energy Corporation. About TNGEC: TNGEC (or TNGECL) stands for Tamil Nadu Green Energy Corporation Limited.   Formed by the Government of Tamil Nadu, it is a state-owned public sector company dedicated entirely to driving the state's clean energy transition, fast-tracking renewable power generation, and funding green initiatives.   Here is a breakdown of how it came to be, its core responsibilities, and its major projects. Why was it formed? Before TNGEC's inception, renewable energy responsibilities in Tamil Nadu were fragmented. In a major restructuring move, the state government streamlined operations by: Carving out the Renewable Energy wing of TANGEDCO (Ta...

Power factor equation in Two Wattmeter method

Image
This image explains the Two-Wattmeter Method used to measure the power factor of a three-phase balanced load . Circuit Description A balanced 3-phase load (impedance Z ) is connected in star (Y) configuration. Two wattmeters ( W₁ and W₂ ) are connected to measure power in the three-phase circuit. Current coils of the wattmeters are connected in the R and B lines. Voltage coils are connected between: W₁: R and Y phases W₂: B and Y phases Measurements The wattmeter readings are: W₁ = Reading of Wattmeter 1 W₂ = Reading of Wattmeter 2

Power and Impedance Tangent Ratios: Two Triangles, One Angle

Image
We introduced the concept of Power and Impedance Tangent Ratios, showing that the ratios \(Q/P\) and \(X/R\) are mathematically identical for a linear sinusoidal AC circuit. The figure above provides an intuitive geometric interpretation of this relationship. 1. Power Triangle The Power Triangle represents the relationship between active, reactive, and apparent power. Active Power (P) – Useful power converted into work (kW). Reactive Power (Q) – Power exchanged between the source and reactive elements (kVAR). Apparent Power (S) – Total supplied power (kVA). From the triangle, Power Factor \[   \cos\theta=\frac{P}{S} \] Power Tangent Ratio \[   \tan\theta=\frac{Q}{P} \] The tangent ratio indicates the amount of reactive power required for every unit of active power. --- 2. Impedance Triangle Similarly, the Impedance Triangle describes the electrical characteristics of the load. Resistance (R) – Dissipates real power. Reactance (X) – Stores and releases energy. Imped...

Principles of Power System by Mehta V K

Image
Principles of Power System by V.K. Mehta and Rohit Mehta is one of the most popular and foundational textbooks for electrical engineering students. It provides a comprehensive, clear, and highly accessible introduction to how electrical energy is generated, transmitted, distributed, and protected. Here is a breakdown of the core principles and key areas covered in the book: 1. Power Generation and Economics The book starts with how electricity is produced and the financial logic behind it. Generation Methods: It covers traditional power stations—including thermal (coal), hydro-electric, and nuclear power plants—explaining their layouts and operational principles. Variable Load Problems: Power plants don't face a constant demand. The book introduces crucial terms like Load Factor , Diversity Factor , and Plant Capacity Factor , which help engineers design efficient systems to meet fluctuating demands. Economics & Tariffs: It explains how the cost of electricity is calculated...
