Power factor equation in Two Wattmeter method

This image explains the Two-Wattmeter Method used to measure the power factor of a three-phase balanced load.

Circuit Description

  • A balanced 3-phase load (impedance Z) is connected in star (Y) configuration.
  • Two wattmeters (W₁ and W₂) are connected to measure power in the three-phase circuit.
  • Current coils of the wattmeters are connected in the R and B lines.
  • Voltage coils are connected between:
    • W₁: R and Y phases
    • W₂: B and Y phases

Measurements

The wattmeter readings are:

  • W₁ = Reading of Wattmeter 1
  • W₂ = Reading of Wattmeter 2
