The proposed ASC framework introduces four new parameters derived from the conventional sequence components.
1. Symmetrical Effective Phase Voltage (SEP)
The Symmetrical Effective Phase Voltage (SEP) represents the effective magnitude of all three sequence voltages.
SEP is related to the quadratic mean of the three phase-to-ground voltages.
2. Symmetrical Effective Line Voltage (SEL)
The Symmetrical Effective Line Voltage (SEL) represents the effective magnitude of the positive- and negative-sequence voltages.
SEL is closely related to the quadratic mean of the three line-to-line voltages.
The Tangent Angle of Unbalance (TAU) is proposed as a geometric measure of voltage unbalance.
Unlike the conventional Voltage Unbalance Angle, TAU is not a phase-angle difference. It is an angular representation of the ratio between the negative- and positive-sequence voltage magnitudes.
The Earth Tangent Angle (ETA) represents the contribution of the zero-sequence component.
ETA provides an intuitive indication of neutral or earth involvement in the three-phase system.
Although SEP completes the geometric representation, it is not an independent parameter because it can be determined from SEL and ETA.
Among the four proposed quantities,
SEL
TAU
ETA
are sufficient to describe the sequence voltage magnitudes.
The parameter SEP is dependent and can be obtained from SEL and ETA.
Consequently, SEL,ETA, TAU (SET) forms the proposed Advanced Symmetrical Components coordinate system.
The sequence voltage magnitudes can be reconstructed directly from the ASC parameters.
These expressions provide a geometric interpretation of the three sequence components.
Accordingly,
Positive-sequence voltage corresponds to the Cosine Term.
Negative-sequence voltage corresponds to the Sine Term.
Zero-sequence voltage corresponds to the Tangent Term.
This trigonometric interpretation offers a simple and intuitive way to visualise the distribution of the sequence components.
The ASC representation is analogous to a geometric coordinate system.
SEL represents the radial coordinate.
TAU determines the distribution between positive- and negative-sequence voltages.
ETA determines the contribution of the zero-sequence (earth) component.
Thus, the conventional sequence components are transformed into a new set of physically meaningful geometric parameters.
The proposed Advanced Symmetrical Components may provide a useful framework for:
Voltage unbalance analysis
Power-quality monitoring
Neutral voltage assessment
Earth-fault studies
Protective relaying
Visualisation of three-phase operating conditions
Educational interpretation of symmetrical components
Further analytical and experimental validation will determine the range of applications for this representation.
The proposed Advanced Symmetrical Components (ASC) introduce an alternative coordinate representation of three-phase symmetrical components. By representing the system through Symmetrical Effective Line Voltage (SEL), Tangent Angle of Unbalance (TAU), and Earth Tangent Angle (ETA), the ASC framework provides a compact geometric interpretation of positive-, negative-, and zero-sequence voltages.
The corresponding relationships show that the positive, negative, and zero sequence voltages can be interpreted respectively as the Cosine, Sine, and Tangent terms of the proposed Advanced Symmetrical Components. This geometric viewpoint may offer a useful complement to the conventional symmetrical component representation for analysis, education, and future research.
Example:
V+=400V, V-=10V, V0=3V
ASC:
Vsep=231.019 V
Vsel=400.125 V
TAU = 1.4321 (deg)
ETA=0.4296 (deg)
